There are few things more Powerful than a Life Lived with Passsionate Clarity. Every Moment is waiting to be Seized by those who are Chasing Daylight! The timing is perfect for our community to look at the life of Jonathan from 1 Samuel 14 as we work through Erwin McManus' Chasing Daylights.

I am so excited about this week! See the press release that Robert & Sheryl Mayo submitted.

MOSAICRC – CELEBRATES ONE YEAR IN RANCHO CUCAMONGA<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

When James Faulkner left LA County a few years ago he never thought he would find another church community like Mosaic. Faulkner, 33, an African-American musician and producer from <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Moreno Valley, places a high value on diversity, openness, acceptance, and honesty.

“I hadn’t been going to church and I was blown away a year ago when a friend told me that Mosaic was coming to the Inland Empire. I couldn’t believe that they were going to launch another Mosaic in Rancho Cucamonga. I love their line – ‘Ever want to be part of something beautiful?’ I knew I had to check it out.”

He was surprised how at home he felt at MosaicRC. He found a trendy church that reflects a young-adult pace and format that includes upbeat music, state-of-the-art sound and video equipment, and candle-lit coffee tables.

Faulkner was especially taken with Dr. John Edgar Caterson, 43, MosaicRC’s lead pastor, who sports circa 1958 model Ray Band glasses and preaches in either six-pocket Khakis or Jeans while sitting on a wooden stool as if he here reading poetry at a cafe.

“This guy stands up and starts talking about his family. He was pretty transparent – which I wasn’t expecting. . . Plus, I come to find out JE [as most of the MosaicRC community calls him] has a bi-racial family just like mine. He understands the challenges I have faced.”

So Faulkner kept going back. “MosaicRC is helping me discover how all the pieces can fit together. It’s a place my family and I call home.”

MosaicRC has taken a few queues from the original Mosaic – a multicultural, multiethnic, multi-location church that meets at the Mayan Theater in downtown Los Angeles – by placing an emphasis on gathering a community of innovators. Mosaic attracts artists, musicians, actors, and writers who might not be comfortable in more traditional congregations. MosaicLA’s senior pastor, Rev. Erwin Raphael McManus – a guru to many younger pastors in America – states, “We’re part of the insurrection, trying to turn Christianity upside down. We are an experimental church, God’s research and development arm.”

Erwin’s brother, Alex, heads up the Mosaic Alliance – a movement of churches from many denominations that share the same ‘mission-minded’ core values - which has communities in Seattle, Manhattan, Atlanta, Boston, Miami, and more underway in Germany, Spain and Scotland. At the Mosaic Leadership Conference on <st1:date w:st="on" Month="5" Day="7" Year="2004">May 7, 2004</st1:date>, the McManus brothers commissioned JE and his wife Kristi to plant a Mosaic community in Rancho Cucamonga.

Church-planting isn’t a new thing for Caterson. More than a decade ago he was experimenting with ‘Repackaging Church for the Next Generation.’ In 1995 he planted “Night Light” in Princeton, New Jersey. It was a fast-paced interactive, multimedia, alternative music club geared towards reaching the next generation. The year before launching Night Light Caterson spent 11 months traveling around the world – to twenty-two countries – preaching, teaching, and planting churches. In Edinburgh, Scotland he helped plant a church in a pub down on <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Princess Street</st1:address></st1:Street>. This gave him the idea of starting a church with a club-like format.

Caterson loves the diversity that other cultures have to offer. Two years ago he moved his family to Rancho Cucamonga and started BNMI, a California Non-Profit that focuses on developing communities that experience cultural transformation. Prior to their move to the Inland Empire, BNMI pioneered community projects in Quito, Ecuador; Chaing Mai, Thailand; and Campinas, Brazil.

Planting a Mosaic community in Rancho Cucamonga made sense to Caterson and the BNMI board. MosaicRC is part of The Christian and Missionary Alliance – an outward focused movement with over 1200 overseas workers in nearly sixty countries. “The board knew I loved living in the Inland Empire and felt the cultural awareness of the CMA would complement the people of Rancho Cucamonga,” states Caterson. “I believe the people of Rancho Cucamonga deserve a church that includes a mix of spirituality, the visual and performing arts, and borrows from non-Western cultures.”

MosaicRC launched its first public service a year ago at Deer Canyon School in Alta Loma. It is a community that welcomes people from all walks of life, regardless of where they are in their spiritual journey. They will celebrate their one year anniversary on <st1:date w:st="on" Month="2" Day="26" Year="2006">February 26, 2006</st1:date> at the Rancho Cucamonga Community Center at Central Park [<st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">11200 Base Line Road</st1:address></st1:Street>].

Mosaic’s unusual name is meant to reflect the diversity of its members, and is symbolic of a broken and fragmented humanity which can become a work of beauty under the artful hands of God.

The church seeks to demonstrate this dynamic each week during its worship service. On one recent Sunday, while Caterson spoke on choices – the most spiritual activity you will engage in today is making choices – an artist stood at an easel and painted.

Tenille Lapp, 23, an artist and Azusa Pacific University Student enjoys painting at MosaicRC. “It is cool that I am given the freedom to visually express what God is doing in my life and in our community,” says Lapp. “I never thought I would be at a church where the arts are utilized in such a way during the service.”

Everyone is on a first name basis at MosaicRC. “Hi, I am John,” Caterson greets each guest with a smile and handshake.

At Deer Canyon School, nearly 20 volunteers arrive – some as early as <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="7" Minute="0">7:00 am</st1:time> – to clean and set up for the Sunday Service. After the <st1:time w:st="on" Hour="10" Minute="0">10:00 am</st1:time> service is through volunteers remove MosaicRC trappings so things are in order for students and teachers on Monday morning.

In addition to their weekly service on Sunday, the MosaicRC community meets in small groups throughout the Inland Empire.
